In order to encourage talented minority students to pursue careers in Classics and/or Classical Archaeology and to enhance the diversity in these fields, the American Philological Association (APA) and the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) jointly administer a summer scholarship program for promising minority undergraduates majoring in the study of classical languages and classical cultures. The Joint Committee on Scholarships for Minority Students, which consists of members appointed by both professional organizations, oversees the annual selection process and awarding of these scholarships.
Since 1994 the APA Committee has awarded one $3,000 award each year, which recipients have used towards summer study in Classics or participation in classical archaeological programs and field schools. In 2006 we gave out two full awards and in 2007 one $3000 and one $1000 award. All recipients of the scholarship through 2006 have gone on to graduate study in Classics or related fields. Thus the scholarship program is proving to be even more successful than originally imagined!
We are always looking towards the future. We need and want to do more! When the APA and the AIA joined forces in 2006 and recreated this committee as a collaborative effort, our intention was to offer more summer scholarships in the future and, if resources grow significantly, to offer a full-year scholarship to a minority student for graduate study. But we need your help! To contribute to the Minority Scholarship Program, go to:
Our hope is to make the fields of Classics and Classical Archaeology attractive and welcoming to minorities
