General Information on Minority Scholarships in Classics and Classical Archaeology
Call for applications | Friends and Supporters of the joint apa/aia minority scholarship program
We are contacting you on behalf of the Joint Committee on Minority Scholarships of the American Philological Association and the Archaeological Institute of America. Every year the APA and AIA award at least one minority undergraduate a scholarship for summer study in Classics or Classical Archaeology. In 2008 we awarded two awards, one of $3000 and one of $2000. These funds are intended to facilitate a challenging and transformative academic experience that helps launch well-qualified minorities into graduate study and an academic career in Classics or Classical Archaeology.
We seek your help in identifying prospects for this award. In the past, the strongest candidates have been well prepared in one of the ancient classical languages and have demonstrated aninterest in one of the disciplinary sub-fields. Typically, the winners have used the scholarship to study abroad at an established institution, like the American School of Classical Studies in Athens or the American Academy in Rome or in field schools in Italy, Greece, Egypt, etc., but well-conceived programs of directed study at museums and other research institutions have been funded in the past as well. Proposals might also include language training at institutions in the U.S, Canada, or Europe.
Candidates will be judged on the basis of (a) academic qualifications, including demonstrated ability in aclassical language or in fields that prepare a student to become a classicist or classical archaeologist; (b) the quality of the proposal for study, particularly as preparation for a career in classics or classical archaeology, and (c) financial need. The maximum amount of an award will be $3,000. The winner will be announced by January 31, 2008.
Please encourage all of your qualified undergraduates to apply for this award. Eligibility for this scholarship is open to students who belong to groups identified by current federal guidelines as minorities: Black/African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Asian Americans. Better yet, put an application (see attached) in their hands and tell them they're applying!
Many thanks for aiding our effort to increase the representation of minorities in our fields.
