American Academy in Rome - Rome,
Italy/New York, NY
The American Academy in Rome invites applications for
the position of Director of the Classical Summer School.
Open to high school teachers and serious students of Latin,
ancient history and the classics, the Summer School is
designed to provide a well-founded understanding of the
growth and development of the ancient city of Rome and its
immediate environs from the earliest times to the age of
Constantine, through a careful study of material remains and
literary sources. With the help of an assistant and the
Academy staff in Rome and New York, the Director is
responsible for the overall operation of the Summer School.
The Director, working with a small admissions committee,
selects the students in early spring, selects the Assistant
Director, prepares the syllabus and arranges for student
lodgings. During the six-week term (late June through early
August), the Director and Assistant Director meet with
students daily for orientation lectures and tours of ancient
sites. The Director also must submit an annual report on the
program to the Academy. The Director will hold the position
for a three-year term, beginning in 2001. Please send a

AMERICAN PHILOLOGICAL
ASSOCIATION/THESAURUS LINGUAE LATINAE --MUNICH, GERMANY
The American Philological Association invites
applications for a one-year fellowship, tenable from July
2000 through June 2001, which will enable an American
scholar to participate in the work of the Thesaurus Linguae
Latinae Institute in Munich. Fellows at the TLL develop a
broadened perspective of the range and complexity of the
Latin language and culture from the classical period through
the early Middle Ages, contribute signed articles to the
Thesaurus, have the opportunity to participate in a
collaborative international research project, and work with
senior scholars in the field of Latin lexicography. The
fellowship carries a stipend in the amount of $31,500 and is
made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment
for the Humanities. Applicants must be United States
citizens or permanent residents, already have the Ph.D., or
anticipate the award of the degree by July 1, 2000. The
fellowship offers valuable experience for scholars in a
variety of specialties (e.g., Latin language and literature,
Roman Law, Roman History, the literature of early
Christianity); although it is not limited to individuals in
Latin philology, applicants should possess a thorough
familiarity with and a special interest in the Latin
language. It is anticipated that applicants will already
have a reading knowledge of German and will be willing to
work toward proficiency in spoken German. Further details

benefits the applicant expects to derive from the Fellowship
for his/her research and teaching, and the names of three

at the rank of Assistant Professor, effective July 1, 2000.

The Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at
UCLA - LOS ANGELES, CA
Tenured Faculty Position and Program Director. UCLA
announces a full-time, tenured position as a Faculty member
and Director of the new UCLA-Getty MA Program in the
Conservation of Archaeological and Ethnographic Material.
This program is a collaboration of the Cotsen Institute of
Archaeology at UCLA and the J. Paul Getty Trust and focuses
on the conservation of archaeological and ethnographic

of a tenure accruing assistant professorship. Salary

CLASSICS/MEDITERRANEAN RELIGIONS AND CULTURES/ANCIENT
HISTORY. The Department of Religion and Classics at the
University of Rochester seeks to appoint a senior lecturer
in Classics. Candidates should be prepared to teach three
undergraduate courses per semester in the Classics program,
which will include Latin at all levels, some Classical and
New Testament Greek, and several culture courses including
Roman religion. Additional responsibilities will include
advising majors, working with the undergraduate teaching
fellows, and directing independent studies. An essential
aspect of this position is program development, and the
senior lecturer would be expected to explore and experiment
with models for coordinating small upper-level language
offerings with other larger upper-level courses in English,
in order to make the content of each semester's language
courses better able to support and enrich the overall
Religion and Classics programs. Further, the senior lecturer
would play a key role in the Department's plans to develop a
new Classics concentration enhanced by certification in the
teaching of Latin at the University of Rochester's Warner
School of Education. Establishing such a collaborative
program may demand extensive time and energy, in which case
the lecturer will qualify for a one-course teaching
reduction per year.
The position is non-tenure track, with an initial
appointment of three to five years, with the possibility of
renewal. There will be annual performance and programmatic
reviews. Given the teaching and development demands, the
senior lecturer would not be required to publish
original
scholarship, though s/he will have the time and congenial
atmosphere for pursuing relevant projects in pedagogy or
research.
Proven excellence in teaching and a completed Ph.D. are

- Blegen Research Fellow, 2000-01. The Vassar College
Department of Classics invites applications for the
Blegen Research Fellowship in 2000-01, which is intended
for a scholar who requires a year of reduced teaching
responsibility to develop or bring to fruition a major
project in a specified area of research. The fellowship
is tenable for one year by a scholar who has taught
full-time at a college or university for at least three
years and holds the rank of Assistant or Associate
Professor (or its equivalent). For the 2000-01 academic

research, the Blegen Fellow will teach two courses, one
per semester. One, of the Fellow's own devising, should
