American Academy in Rome - Rome, Italy/New York, NY
The American Academy in Rome invites applications for the position of Director of the Classical Summer School. Open to high school teachers and serious students of Latin, ancient history and the classics, the Summer School is designed to provide a well-founded understanding of the growth and development of the ancient city of Rome and its immediate environs from the earliest times to the age of Constantine, through a careful study of material remains and literary sources. With the help of an assistant and the Academy staff in Rome and New York, the Director is responsible for the overall operation of the Summer School. The Director, working with a small admissions committee, selects the students in early spring, selects the Assistant Director, prepares the syllabus and arranges for student lodgings. During the six-week term (late June through early August), the Director and Assistant Director meet with students daily for orientation lectures and tours of ancient sites. The Director also must submit an annual report on the program to the Academy. The Director will hold the position for a three-year term, beginning in 2001. AMERICAN PHILOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION/THESAURUS LINGUAE LATINAE --MUNICH, GERMANY
The American Philological Association invites applications for a one-year fellowship, tenable from July 2000 through June 2001, which will enable an American scholar to participate in the work of the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae Institute in Munich. Fellows at the TLL develop a broadened perspective of the range and complexity of the Latin language and culture from the classical period through the early Middle Ages, contribute signed articles to the Thesaurus, have the opportunity to participate in a collaborative international research project, and work with senior scholars in the field of Latin lexicography. The fellowship carries a stipend in the amount of $31,500 and is made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.   Applicants must be United States citizens or permanent residents, already have the Ph.D., or anticipate the award of the degree by July 1, 2000. The fellowship offers valuable experience for scholars in a variety of specialties (e.g., Latin language and literature, Roman Law, Roman History, the literature of early Christianity); although it is not limited to individuals in Latin philology, applicants should possess a thorough familiarity with and a special interest in the Latin language. It is anticipated that applicants will already have a reading knowledge of German and will be willing to work toward proficiency in spoken German.     Classics and History Programs, Ancient Historian.
    Bard College is seeking to fill a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor position for an ancient historian or a classicist working on historical/historiographical issues. We seek someone who can help expand a growing program by possibly teaching beginning and intermediate Greek and Latin as well as courses on ancient history in translation. Department of Archaeology at Boston University announces it is reopening the search for a faculty post at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in remote sensing and archaeology, effective September 1, 2000. BROCK UNIVERSITY - St. Catharines, Ontario, CANADA
The Department of Classics at Brock University invites applications for a probationary (tenure-track) appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, effective July 1, 2000. The position is subject to final budgetary approval, and the appointment could be made on a limited term basis. Preferred qualifications include a completed Ph.D.; publications and continuing research; demonstrated achievement in undergraduate teaching.

The Classics Department normally consists of six members teaching a variety of courses towards pass and honours degrees in Classical Studies, Classical Languages, and Ancient Art and Archaeology (but including the languages). Besides these major programs, it also offers introductory courses in mythology and in civilization to satisfy a general requirement, and first-year language courses to satisfy a language requirement. Several Andrew W. Mellon foundation fellowships for one year of teaching and research will be awarded for the period beginning July 2000, offering stipends of $33,000. The areas of specialization for this year's competition include Classics; applicants from any area of Greek and Roman studies are welcome, and we would be especially interested in specialists in the history of science, the later (fourth century and after) Roman empire, Hellenistic history and archaeology, or Byzantine history and culture. While in residence at Cornell, postdoctoral fellows hold department affiliation, have limited teaching duties and the opportunity for scholarly work.

The Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA - LOS ANGELES, CA
Tenured Faculty Position and Program Director. UCLA announces a full-time, tenured position as a Faculty member and Director of the new UCLA-Getty MA Program in the Conservation of Archaeological and Ethnographic Material. This program is a collaboration of the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA and the J. Paul Getty Trust and focuses on the conservation of archaeological and ethnographic materials. Students for this three-year program will first be admitted for the fall of 2002. The Director will lead the final planning stages of the program that will include the curriculum and course development and the hiring of two other faculty for the program. After its inception, the Director will administer and teach within the program. Candidates should: 1) possess an advanced degree in conservation or related field (anthropology, archaeology, atmospheric science, chemistry, etc.); 2) be able to demonstrate experience in issues relating to archaeological/ethnographic conservation and teaching; 3) demonstrate experience in adminis- tration and fundraising; and 4) be an active researcher in conservation issues. The Crake Doctoral Fellowship. The Crake Foundation and the Department of Classics at Mount Allison University are pleased to announce the Crake Doctoral Fellowship in Classics for the academic year 2000-2001.

The Crake Fellowship is non-renewable, open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents who at the time of taking up the fellowship have completed all course and residential requirements for the Doctorate in Classics, passed all preliminary examinations and completed the research for the thesis, and who can reasonably be expected to finish the doctorate during the year of the fellowship.

The holder will be asked to teach one course in each of the Fall and Winter terms, give a public lecture, and be in Sackville from September to May.

In 2000-2001 the holder of the Crake Fellowship will receive $18,000, with an allowance of up to $2,500 to cover moving and other research-associated expenses.
