ALLEGHENY COLLEGE - MEADVILLE, PA
Classical Studies / Ancient History. The History Department and the Modern and Classical Languages Department at Allegheny College invite applications for an approved tenure track position in classical studies beginning fall 2002. The successful candidate will be expected to teach lower-level and upper-level courses in Roman and Greek history, language courses in Latin, and to participate in a college-wide freshmen/sophomore liberal studies program that emphasizes writing and speaking. Those able to teach an occasional course in classical philosophy are especially encouraged to apply. Teaching load at Allegheny includes three courses per semester. Allegheny College is a highly selective private liberal arts college with emphasis on teaching. AMERICAN COUNCIL OF LEARNED SOCIETIES &endash; NEW YORK, NY
The ACLS invites nominations for the position of President (Chief Executive Officer), duties to begin in 2003. A well-established scholar-teacher in higher education, with pertinent leadership and administrative experience, a broad awareness of the conditions shaping scholarship and education, and a willingness to undertake fundraising activities, is sought.

A non-profit organization founded in 1919 whose headquarters are in New York City, ACLS is a federation of 64 national learned organizations in the humanities and social sciences and is the preeminent private humanities organization in the U.S. The purpose of the Council, as set forth in its constitution, is "the advancement of humanistic studies in all fields of learning in the humanities and social sciences and the maintenance and strengthening of relations among national societies devoted to such studies."

The review of nominations and applications will begin on May 15 and will continue until the position is filled. American Philological Association - Thesaurus Linguae Latinae
The American Philological Association invites applications for a one-year fellowship, tenable from July 2002 through June 2003, with the possibility of renewal for one additional year, which will enable an American scholar to participate in the work of the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae Institute in Munich. Fellows at the TLL develop a broadened perspective of the range and complexity of the Latin language and culture from the classical period through the early Middle Ages, contribute signed articles to the Thesaurus, have the opportunity to participate in a collaborative international research project, and work with senior scholars in the field of Latin lexicography. The fellowship carries a stipend in the amount of $31,500 and is made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Applicants must be United States citizens or permanent residents, already have the Ph.D., or anticipate the award of the degree by July 1, 2002. The fellowship offers valuable experience for scholars in a variety of specialties (e.g., Latin language and literature, Roman law, Roman history, the literature of early Christianity); although it is not limited to individuals working in Latin philology, applicants should possess a thorough familiarity with and a special interest in the Latin language. It is anticipated that applicants will already have a reading knowledge of German and will be willing to work toward proficiency in spoken German. POSITIONS TWO AND THREE: Elizabeth A. Whitehead Visiting Professors. Term: Early September 2003, to June 1, 2004. Compensation: $18,000, plus round-trip airfare, housing and board at the School.

Qualifications: Managing Committee Member or staff member at a Cooperating Institution; a research project which utilizes the facilities of the School and enriches the academic program of the School.

Duties: None. (Whitehead Professors, however, traditionally make use of the opportunity which their presence at the School affords to offer a seminar during the winter term on the subject of their expertise.)

POSITIONS FOUR AND FIVE: Directors of the Summer Sessions (Gertrude Smith Professors). Term: Summer 2003. Compensation: Stipend commensurate with rank, ranging from $4,500 to $6,000 plus travel and expenses.

Qualifications: Former membership in the School; at least two years' teaching in a post-secondary educational institution; full training in Classics with some knowledge of classical archaeology and modern Greek, and stamina, good health, and a sense of humor.

Duties: To plan the itinerary, in consultation with the staff in Athens, at least six months prior to the session; to collaborate with the Committee on the Summer Sessions in membership selection; to correspond with members concerning travel, equipment, academic requirements, etc.; to supervise all aspects of the program in Greece, including teaching, coordinating with on-site expert lecturers, keeping a detailed log of the sessions, and submitting a report to the Director.

ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY &endash; TEMPE, AZ
LECTURER OF LATIN: 1-year appointment, starting August 16, 2002, annually renewable depending on performance and funding.

REQUIREMENTS: Ph.D. by August 16, 2002 in Latin or Classical Languages, experience in teaching college-level Latin.

AUGUSTANA COLLEGE - ROCK ISLAND, IL
The Department of Classics is authorized to appoint a tenure-track Assistant Professor (with Ph.D. by 9/01/02) or (if A.B.D.) Instructor. The annual number of courses (quarter calendar) is 2-3-2. The research specialization is open. What matters most is the ability to teach--imaginatively, designedly, engagingly--a broad, flexible, and innovative array of undergraduate courses. These include, at one point or another, all undergraduate levels of Greek and Latin, the main genres of Classical literature in translation, and introductions to Greek and Roman history. A commitment to teaching two courses (of the 2-3-2) in English composition, with experienced support, is integral to the position. We further look for interest in teaching in collaborative structures and in off-campus programs at sites in Europe and around the Mediterranean basin.

POSITION ONE: Ancient Historian. Bard College is seeking an ancient historian, or a classicist working on historical issues, for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level, pending approval. We seek someone who can help expand a growing program in ancient history, and who can also contribute courses in Greek and Latin. BOWDOIN COLLEGE - BRUNSWICK, ME (Three Positions)

Two tenure track positions in Women's Studies beginning August 2002. We expect to hire at the assistant professor level but are open to an appointment at associate or full professor for one of the two positions. These two positions will support the core of our Women's Studies Program that now has over 30 faculty members teaching courses in it. The two positions will ideally complement one another in disciplinary perspective (one in social science and one in humanities) and in terms of location of inquiry (U.S.-based and global). Both positions require a firm grounding in women's studies and feminist theory. The faculty in these positions will be responsible for teaching in rotation the introductory women's studies course, feminist theory, a senior level capstone course for majors, and courses in their own areas of expertise. Brown University - PROVIDENCE, RI
Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature. Three-year contract beginning July 2002, tenure track. Applicants must have the Ph.D. (or expect it very soon) and must possess international comparatist qualifications i.e., expertise in cross-cultural analysis as well as professional linguistic competence for advanced scholarship and teaching in several major literatures. Teaching experience, a strong commitment to teaching excellence, and a record or compelling promise of research and publication are required. Preference for, but not limited to, the areas of Classics, modern European, modern Latin American. Teaching load: two courses (totaling 6 hours) per semester. Salary will be competitive. BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY - WALTHAM, MA
The Department of Classical Studies at Brandeis University invites applications for the teaching of two courses in Classical Art and Archaeology in the Spring term, 2002. Both meet for 80 minutes on Tuesday and Friday. Typical enrollments are from 35-50 students.

The first course, CLAS/FA 134, is a slide lecture survey of the art and archaeology of Ancient Rome which covers the material remains of Rome from the founding of the city to the end of the Empire. Pompeii, Herculaneum, Ostia, and various cities in the provinces are also considered in some detail.

The second course, called "Topics in Greek and Roman Art and Archaeology" (CLAS/FA 145), is a more intimate, interactive lecture course, with topics changing every spring from Greek to Roman. A Greek topic is scheduled for the Spring of 2002. A selection of recent course titles for CLAS/FA 145 includes: "Greeks in the Bronze Age," "Gender and Sexuality in Ancient Greek Art," "Greek Cities and Sanctuaries," and "Greek Mythology through Vase Painting." There would be considerable freedom for the successful candidate to teach a Greek topic from his or her expertise. Likewise, the Roman survey course can be tailored to the candidate's concept and expertise.

Candidates should be A.B.D. or hold a Ph.D. in Classics (Latin and Greek languages and literatures), Classical Art and Archaeology, or in Ancient Art History. Candidates with teaching experience and evidence of teaching ability are preferred.
