Amherst College Keiter Postdoctoral Fellowship in Classics
Amherst's Robert E. Keiter 1957 Fund for Postdoctoral Fellows, with matching funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, supports exceptionally promising young scholars for two years of half-time teaching (one course each semester) and half-time research at the College. As part of the Keiter Fellowship program, Amherst will appoint a postdoctoral fellow as a Visiting Assistant Professor in Classics for the academic years 2007-2009. The Keiter Postdoctoral Fellowship is a full-time salaried appointment that is open only to recent Ph.D. recipients who have not held a regular faculty appointment.
We seek a Fellow who will contribute to the department's program in the language, literature, and culture of the Romans. Over the course of four semesters the Fellow may expect to teach courses at all levels of Latin instruction for majors and potential majors and a course of his/her own design on some aspect of the Roman world for the broader student population at Amherst.
In addition to their teaching duties, Keiter Fellows may help with course development, foster interdisciplinarity, and introduce new pedagogies. The program is designed to provide fellows with valuable teaching experience and time to complete and publish their research prior to seeking full-time tenure-track positions; fellows are encouraged to pursue their independent research programs vigorously and have all of Amherst's facilities and a modest research allowance to assist them. The Keiter Fellow in Classics will be assigned a primary mentor in the department and will be encouraged to attend orientation programs and special mentoring events for assistant professors at Amherst. Keiter Fellows are not asked to serve as academic advisors, although they may act as thesis advisors if appropriate student projects emerge that are consonant with their own scholarship and long-term professional interests.

Experience Required: MS in civil or bio-systems engineering, geography, environmental science, environmental planning, history, archaeology, or anthropology; excellent oral and written communication skills; 10+ years experience with a consulting firm. A BS in the appropriate discipline might be augmented by supplemental years of experience. Requires outstanding organizational and team building skills. Experience in managing a large team of environmental professionals (20 - 40 +) for major infrastructure construction projects is critical specifically including agency permitting and coordination (including cultural resources agencies), working directly with design engineers, and construction contractors. Stanford University seeks 10-12 post-doctoral Teaching Fellows for 2007-08. Teaching Fellows lead seminar discussions for Introduction to the Humanities (IHUM) lecture courses that fulfill Stanford’s year-long requirement for freshmen. IHUM courses build intellectual foundations in humanistic study and enhance skills in textual analysis, reasoning, argumentation, and oral and written expression. Interdisciplinary, thematic courses in autumn quarter are followed by disciplinary two-quarter course sequences in winter and spring. Teaching Fellows work closely with each other on teaching teams and with members of the Stanford faculty in archeology, classics, comparative literature, cultural and social anthropology, American studies, drama, English, comparative studies in race and ethnicity, French and Italian, European and Islamic history, music, philosophy, religious studies and history of science. Teaching Fellows teach three seminar discussion sections (averaging 15 students) that meet twice weekly and coordinate with course lectures given by faculty.

Starting salary will be approximately $45,000. Professional development support is provided for fellows’ research and scholarship as well as for technology in teaching.

The Executive Director is charged with the following responsibilities:

POSITION TWO: The Department of Classics at the Florida State University has been authorized to make the appointment beginning in August 2007 of a new 12-month Assistant in Classics (lecturer) position whose primary assignment will be classroom teaching. Assistant Professor of Greek. Macalester College invites applications for a two-year Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship from recent Ph.D.s in Greek or Latin Literature. Area of interest is open, but preference will be given to candidates with the ability to teach specialized courses in drama or who otherwise add to the strengths of a thriving undergraduate Classics department. The Fellowship will begin September, 2007 and entails half-time teaching responsibilities.
The Fellow will offer one course each semester, including introductory and perhaps advanced courses in Greek and/or Latin language and courses in translation. With funding from the Canada Research Council (CRC) Chair in Roman Archaeology, the Department of Classics, University of Manitoba, will offer a one-year Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Roman Archaeology to commence July 1, 2007. This residential Postdoctoral Fellowship will have an annual value of $40,000 Canadian. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to undertake an independent research project dealing with a topic in Roman Archaeology or Art. The supervisor of this postdoctoral fellowship is Dr. Lea Stirling, CRC Chair in Roman Archaeology (Tier 2), whose interests encompass both archaeology and ancient art.
