THE AMERICAN NUMISMATIC SOCIETY - NEW YORK, NY
The American Numismatic Society seeks to appoint a Librarian with effective date as soon as possible. UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA – MINNEAPOLIS, MN (Two Positions)
The Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies at the University of Minnesota invites applications for two positions.

POSITION ONE: We seek a full-time, academic year (08/25/08-05/24/09) Temporary Assistant Professor in Classics to begin fall semester, 08/25/08. This is a one year, sabbatical replacement position. The successful candidate will be a specialist in Greek literature and culture. The teaching load for a full-time assistant professor is 2 courses per semester.  The appointee is expected to have an active research program and participate fully in department and professional service activities. Courses will consist of: a large introductory lecture course in Greek civilization, a more advanced undergraduate lecture course focusing on a specific period of Greek civilization, one course in intermediate Greek or Latin, and a graduate reading course in Greek.  PhD required by start of position.

POSITION TWO: We seek a full-time, academic year (08/25/08-05/24/09) Lecturer in Classics to begin fall semester, 08/25/08. This is a one year, sabbatical replacement position. The successful candidate will be a specialist in Latin literature and Roman civilization. The teaching load for a full-time lecturer is three courses per semester. Courses will include a lecture course in translation on early imperial Rome, intermediate Latin prose, and intermediate Latin or Greek poetry. Ph.D. required by start of position.

SANTA CLARA UNIVERSITY – SANTA CLARA, CA

The Department of Classics at Washington and Lee University seeks a Latinist for a one-year position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor.  The position may be extended for a second year, if funds are available, and the candidate is capable of teaching ancient Greek at all levels.  Candidates should have their Ph.D. in hand by July 2008 and show evidence of excellence in teaching.  The successful candidate will teach Latin at the intermediate and advanced levels, and possibly a lecture course in a subject of his or her own choosing.

The Department of the Classics is authorized to make a one-year appointment at the level of Visiting Assistant Professor to begin July 2008.  The successful candidate will be expected to bring philological expertise to a department that not only places high emphasis upon the teaching of Greek and Latin, but also plays a major role across the curriculum in courses taught in translation. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University announces an open-rank search for an advanced tenure-track faculty member or a tenured professor in the field of Egyptology.  The aim of this interdisciplinary search is to appoint an outstanding scholar whose research and teaching will complement the University’s current coverage of the civilizations of the ancient world, with a focus on the ancient Near East and Mediterranean.  Applicants should be conversant with the art, archaeology, culture, and history of ancient Egypt, preferably in the third and second millennium BCE, and should also know ancient Egyptian, although it is not anticipated that the appointee will offer language instruction.  The departmental affiliation of the appointee will be determined in light of his or her research and teaching program.  A Ph.D. or equivalent and a distinguished record of scholarship and teaching are expected.  Teaching duties will include courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Department of the Classics seeks applications for a Preceptor in Modern Greek beginning September 2008.  The position is renewable on a yearly basis for up to eight years, based on performance and curricular need.  The finalist will be responsible for offering four language classes a year and undertaking administrative responsibilities in the Program of Modern Greek Studies.

Applicants should be well versed in the issues of teaching Modern Greek as a foreign language, have experience in teaching all levels of the language, have native or near native proficiency in Modern Greek, and must be able to conduct upper level courses in Modern Greek.  Specialization in modern Greek literature, linguistics and culture, or Greek intellectual history and in teaching modern Greek as second language is highly desirable.  A strong doctoral record is preferred.

Assistant Professor.  The Department of Classical Studies, Anthropology and Archaeology at The University of Akron seeks a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor in Classical Studies starting August 2008. The American School of Classical Studies at Athens invites applicants with strengths in teaching and research and with proven experience in Greece for an appointment as Rhys Carpenter Faculty Fellow in Classical Studies. The appointment, which begins July 1, 2008, is for a one- or two-year term and is not renewable. Candidates must have the Ph.D. Preference will be given to those who are within seven years of having received the Ph.D. at the time of appointment and who currently hold a position at a North American university. The area of specialization is open; however, the School does not wish to duplicate, but rather to complement the expertise of its staff. POSITION THREE: Research Professorship - Malcolm H. Wiener Visiting Research Professor 2008-2009 at the Wiener Laboratory of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens.

Term: Early September to June 1, to coincide with the American School's academic year.  It is expected that the applicant will maintain a physical presence at the Wiener Laboratory.

Compensation: Maximum $35,000 stipend for ten-month project.  Waiver of School fees.  Housing.  Hotel and transportation on all Fall School trips and transportation on all winter Attica excursions.
