
The 130th Annual Meeting of the American Philological Association, in conjunction with the Archaeological Institute of America, will be held in Washington, DC, beginning December 27, 1998. The Annual Meeting will be hosted by Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, 2660 Woodley Road, NW, Washington, DC 20008, Telephone (202) 328-2000. The Convention Registration Desk, the Exhibit Hall, the Placement Service, all AIA and APA paper sessions, committee meetings, receptions, and special events will be scheduled in the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel.
Registration is required for attendance at all sessions and for admission into the exhibit area. No one will be admitted into the exhibit area and meeting rooms without the official AIA/APA Annual Meeting badge.
There are three advance registration deadlines:
Prize-Rate Registration: All members who pre-register by October 23 will be
eligible for a pre-registration drawing to receive a complimentary
registration for the Joint Annual Meeting. There will be two awards.
The winners' meeting registrations will be refunded.
Early Bird Pre-Registration at $75.00 for members and $100.00 for non-members is
available until November 18, 1998. (Please note that this is the
deadline for receipt, not postmark, of all
pre-registrationmaterials.) APA membership will be verified.
Pre-registration for a student member will be $25.00, and for a
non-professional spouse/guest of a member, $30.00. The
pre-registration rate for any one day is $40.00. The spouse/guest
category is for a non-professional or non-student guest accompanying
a paid attendee. Only full-time student members are eligible for the
special student rate. All other students must pay the non-member
rate. Proof of full-time student status (e.g., copy of student ID or
a statement of status from department advisor or chair) must be sent
with your registration.
Final Pre-Registration: Any pre-registrations received after November
23, 1998 will be processed at the higher rate indicated on the
registration form. All pre-registration payments must be received
(not postmarked) by December 9, 1998. This is a firm deadline: any
forms received after this date will be processed on-site in
Washington.

Do not send registration materials to the
APA office. Fees are payable in U.S. dollars with checks drawn on a
U.S. bank, or by credit card (Visa or MasterCard). APA members are
strongly encouraged to send their pre-registration form early, and to
make their hotel and travel reservations as soon as possible.
Name badges, plus any additional items ordered in advance, may be
picked up by those who have pre-registered at the Registration desk
in the Convention Registration area on the lower level of the

ON-SITE CONFERENCE REGISTRATION
A Convention Registration area will be set up on the lower level of the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel with the following hours:

The on-site registration fee for members is $100.00, $35.00 for
student members, $45.00 for the non-professional spouse of a member,
and $130.00 for non-members. The spouse/guest category is for a
non-professional or non-student guest accompanying a paid attendee.
One-day registration is available for $45.00. One-day registration is
possible for a single day only; individuals wishing to attend for
more than one day must register at the full rate.
HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS
The Marriott Wardman Park Hotel will host
the Joint Meeting and provide hotel accommodations at reduced
convention rates for Annual Meeting registrants. The reduced rates
per day for December 27-30 are:

A portion of this will be used to offset
meeting expenses. These rates are subject to D.C. sales and occupancy
taxes of 13% and $1.50 per night. The reduced rates are available
three days before and three days after the convention, on a
space-available basis.
Reservations may be made by calling the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel

call Marriott Worldwide Reservations at (800) 228-9290. You must
identify yourself as an attendee of the AIA/APA Joint Annual Meeting
to receive the reduced convention rates. Check-in time is 3:00 p.m.,
check-out time is 12:00 p.m. On December 30th, a secured baggage area
will be established by the hotel for those remaining after
check-out.
The hotel requires that you make your reservations no later than
December 7, 1998 to receive the reduced convention rates. Early
reservations are encouraged in order to ensure that you receive a
room at the headquarters hotel.
Rooms are also available at the Omni Shoreham Hotel which is located
across the street from the Marriott Wardman Park. The rates are:

AIR TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS
American Airlines and Delta Airlines have
been designated the official carriers for the APA for the 1998 Joint
Annual Meeting in Washington. Attendees flying American can save 5%
off the lowest applicable fares, or 10% off unrestricted coach fares,
plus an additional 10-15% discount if booked at least 60 days in
advance. American has waived the Saturday night stay-over requirement
on most of their promotional fares. Discounts on American apply for
travel from December 25, 1998 through January 1, 1999. For
reservations call American Airlines directly at (800) 433-1790, and
give reference number as follows: "AN
NUMBER 28D8UN." Please request that your
tickets be issued through McCord Travel Management, the official
agency for the APA meeting.
Delta is offering 5% off the lowest applicable fares or 10-15% if
bookedat least sixty days in advance. Special zone fares requiring
only a two-night minimum stay are also in place with Delta. Discounts
on Delta apply for travel from December 24 through January 2, 1999.

AIRPORT INFORMATION
The Marriott Wardman Park Hotel is located at 2660 Woodley Road NW, Washington, DC 20008; the Omni Shoreham is at 2500 Calvert Street, NW, Washington, DC 20008. Both hotels are at the Woodley Park-Zoo stop of the Washington Metro. Washington is served by three airports. Washington Dulles International Airport is located 26 miles west of downtown Washington; taxis to downtown cost approximately $40; Washington Flyer provides bus service to downtown hotels, with departures every 45 minutes. Baltimore/Washington International Airport is located 30 miles east of Washington; rail service to Washington's Union Station is frequent. Taxi fare to downtown Washington is approximately $45; for ground transportation call Super Shuttle at (800) 258-3826. Reagan Airport (formerly Washington National Airport) is located south of the city along the Potomac, and is closest to the hotels. Shuttle bus service is available to downtown; taxi fare to downtown is approximately $15. Reagan Airport is accessible via the the yellow and blue lines of the Metro.

Exhibits will be located in the Hall B of the Exhibiton Hall on the Lower Level of the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel. The exhibit hours are as follows:

OPENING NIGHT RECEPTION
A special welcoming reception will be held at the National Museum of Women in the Arts on Sunday, December 27th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Founded just over a decade ago, the museum celebrates the achievements of women artists of all periods and nationalities. Its exhibits range from Italian Renaissance to Expressionism. Tickets for the reception, which include admission to the museum, light hors d'oeuvres, one drink ticket and round-trip transportation are $27.50 per person. Tickets for the opening reception should be ordered on your pre-registration form.
APA PRESIDENTIAL RECEPTION
The Board of Directors cordially invites all APA members attending the 130th Annual Meeting to a reception honoring President Helene Foley on Tuesday, December 29, immediately after the Plenary Session and Presidential Address. Tickets for the APA Presidential Reception will beincluded in the registration materials of all APA members.
MINORITY STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP FUND-RAISER LUNCHEON
The APA's Committee on Scholarships for Minority Students is sponsoring again this year a fund-raising luncheon on Tuesday, December 29, from noon to 2:00 p.m. in the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel. A luncheon reservation/scholarship fund contribution ($75.00) can be made on the pre-registration form. Contributions in excess of $75.00 are welcome; all contributions are tax deductible.
CLASSICAL WASHINGTON TOUR
A special bus tour of Washington, which examines Pierre Charles L'Enfant's original design for the city and highlights the classical architecture of its buildings and monuments. We will view Washington's magnificent monuments and its many equestrian statues as we tour the White House area, Pennsylvania Avenue, Capitol Hill, and Constitution Avenue. Dr. John Ziolkowski, Professor of Classics at George Washington University, will lead the tour on Monday, December 28. The bus will depart at 9:00 am and will return at 12:00 noon. The cost is $20.00 per person. Space islimited to a single bus.
APA PUBLICATIONS
All APA members registered at the Washington meeting will receive with their registration material and badge a certificate worth $10.00 towards the purchase of APA publications at the Scholars Press booth in the Exhibit Hall. Books must be purchased or ordered at the booth during the Annual Meeting itself. The certificate is valid only towards purchases of $20.00 or more.
ABSTRACTS
Abstracts for APA papers may be ordered on the pre-registration form or purchased at the Convention Registration desk. The price of Abstracts is $8.50. For those who have pre-paid, Abstracts will be included with your pre-registration materials. Abstracts for the AIA may also be purchased at $8.50: please indicate this on the pre-registration form.
Members not attending the meeting may order Abstracts directly from the APA office for $8.50, plus the following postage: $2.00 for first-class U.S. postage; $3.75 for Canadian shipments; and $5.00 surface postage forforeign shipments. Copies will be mailed in late January.
AIA PROGRAMS
All APA members in good standing (i.e., 1998 dues paid) receive in the mailin November a copy of the APA Program. Additional copies may be ordered on the registration form and picked up at the on-site registration area with your pre-registration materials. APA members may purchase a copy of the AIA program for $5.00; please indicate this on the enclosed registration form. The AIA program may be picked up with your pre-registration materials.

APA/AIA PLACEMENT SERVICE
The Placement Service Headquarters will be on the lower level of the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel. You must register for the Annual Meeting to use the Placement Service interview facilities at the meeting. The Annual Meeting registration fees are separate from your membership dues and Placement Service dues. All arrangements for interviews between applicants and institutional representatives during the course of the Annual Meeting should be made through the Placement Office.
CHILD CARE
Child care will be offered by KiddieCorp, a licensed, full-service provider employing screened, experienced, CPR- and/or First Aid-trained and certified staff. Children will participate in a customized schedule of creative, educational, age-appropriate activities. The center will operate from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. all four days, December 27 through 30 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel. Please use the Child Care Registration form found in the August 1998 Newsletter or call the APA office at 212/998.3575 for a form.
Please sign up on or before November 13, 1998 to guarantee your spot. Children must be registered for a minimum of three consecutive hours. Rates are $10 per hour per child. The AIA/APA and KiddieCorp reserve the right to cancel child care for insufficient registration.
WEATHER
Washington in December is mild, average highs in the upper 40's with lows around freezing. Colder temperatures are, however, possible, so it's best to be prepared.
CANCELLATION POLICY
Registration fees will be refunded upon written request through December 8, 1998, and are subject to a $10 administrative service fee. Requests received after this date will not be honored. These requests must be sent to the American Philological Association, 19 University Place, Room 328, New York University, New York, NY 10003-4556. Refunds will be processed after the Annual Meeting and before January 31, 1999. Registrants are responsible for canceling their own hotel and travel reservations.
