ONE HUNDRED THIRTY-FIRST ANNUAL MEETING

The 131st Annual Meeting of the American Philological Association, in conjunction with the Archaeological Institute of America, will be held in Dallas, TX, beginning December 27, 1999. The Annual Meeting will be hosted by the Adam’s Mark Hotel Dallas, 400 Olive Street, Dallas, TX 75201; Telephone (214) 922-8000. The Convention Registration Desk, the Exhibit Hall, the Placement Service, all AIA and APA paper sessions, committee meetings, receptions, and special events will be located in the Adam’s Mark Hotel Dallas.

REGISTRATION

On-line registration now available

Registration is required for attendance at all sessions and for admission into the exhibit area. No one will be admitted into the exhibit area and meeting rooms without the official AIA/APA Annual Meeting badge.

ADVANCE REGISTRATION

There are three advance registration deadlines:
Prize Rate Pre-Registration Oct. 22
Reduced rate with a chance at two free registrations.
Early Bird Pre-Registration Nov. 19
Reduced rate registration
Final Pre-Registration Dec. 10
Regular, higher rate preregistration.

Prize-Rate Registration: All members who pre-register by October 22 will be eligible for a pre-registration drawing to receive a complimentary registration for the Joint Annual Meeting. There will be two awards. The winners’ meeting registrations will be refunded.

Early Bird Pre-Registration
at $75.00 for members and $100.00 for non-members is available until November 19, 1999. (Please note that this is the deadline for receipt, not postmark, of all pre-registration materials.) APA membership will be verified. Pre-registration for a student member will be $25.00, and for a non-professional spouse/guest of a member, $30.00. The pre-registration rate for any one day is $40.00. The spouse/guest category is for a non-professional or non-student guest accompanying a paid attendee. Only full-time student members are eligible for the special student rate. All other students must pay the non-member rate. Proof of full-time student status (e.g., copy of student ID or a statement of status from department advisor or chair) must be sent with the registration form.

Final Pre-Registration
: Any pre-registrations received after November 19, 1999, will be processed at the higher rate indicated on the registration form. All pre-registration payments must be received (not postmarked) by December 10, 1999. This is a firm deadline: any forms received after this date will be processed on-site in Dallas.

Fees are payable in U.S. dollars with checks drawn on a U.S. bank, or by credit card (Visa or MasterCard). APA members are strongly encouraged to send their pre-registration forms early, and to make their hotel and travel reservations as soon as possible.

Name badges, plus any additional items ordered in advance, may be picked up by those who have pre-registered at the Registration Desk in the Preconvene Area on the Second Floor of the Conference Center of the Adam’s Mark Hotel Dallas during posted registration hours (see below).


CANCELLATION POLICY

Registration fees will be refunded upon written request through December 10, 1999, and are subject to a $10 administrative service fee. Requests received after this date will not be honored. These requests must be sent



to the American Philological Association, 291 Logan Hall, University of Pennsylvania, 249 S. 36th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104-6304. Refunds will be processed after the Annual Meeting and before January 31, 2000. Registrants are responsible for canceling their own hotel and travel reservations.

ON-SITE CONFERENCE REGISTRATION

A Convention Registration area will be set up on the second floor of the Convention Center in the Adam’s Mark Hotel with the following hours:

Monday, December 27 10:00am-7:00pm
Tuesday, December 28 8:00am-5:00pm
Wednesday, December 29 8:00am-5:00pm
Thursday, December 30 8:00am-1:00pm

The on-site registration fee for members is $100.00, $35.00 for student members, $45.00 for the non-professional spouse of a member, and $130.00 for non-members. The spouse/guest category is for a non-professional or non-student guest accompanying a paid attendee. One-day registration is available for $45.00. One-day registration is possible for a single day only; individuals wishing to attend for more than one day must register at the full rate.


HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS

The Adam’s Mark Hotel Dallas will host the Joint Meeting and provide hotel accommodations at reduced convention rates for Annual Meeting registrants. The reduced rates per day for Dec. 27-30 are:

These rates are subject to state and city taxes of 15%. The reduced rates are available three days before and three days after the convention, on a space-available basis. To make your reservations call the Adam’s Mark directly at 214-922-8000 or Adam’s Mark world-wide reservations at 800-444-ADAM (2326). You must indicate that you are attending the AIA/APA joint meeting to receive these special rates.

Your reservation must be made by December 5 to receive these rates. You are encouraged to make your hotel reservations as soon as possible. Check-in time is 3:00 p.m., check-out time is 12:00 noon. On December 30th, a secured baggage area will be established by the hotel for those remaining after check-out.

AIR TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

American Airlines has been designated the official carrier, and McCord Travel Management, the official agency, for the 1999 APA Annual Meeting in Dallas. For round-trip travel to Dallas between December 26 and December 31, 1999, American offers 5% off of “AAnytime” and “PlanAAhead” fares purchased 14-21 days before departure. Reservations booked at least 60 days prior to departure will be made at a 10% discount off of the lowest fares available. This year American is also offering special discounted fares without a Saturday night stay. These zone fares are refundable for a full or partial refund after deduction of a $75 fee.

Please request that McCord Travel Management issue your tickets, and no ticketing fee will be charged by McCord.


LOCAL INFORMATION

The Adam’s Mark Hotel is located in downtown Dallas at 400 North Olive Street in the arts/financial district. The hotel is near the Pearl Street Station of the DART Light Rail system. With its central location, the Adam’s Mark Hotel is convenient to a number of area attractions.

Dallas is served by two airports. DFW International Airport is located 28 miles northwest of downtown Dallas; taxis to downtown cost approximately $33. Love Field is located just 11 miles northwest of downtown; taxis to downtown cost $10.

Super Shuttle (817-329-2002) provides regular van service between DFW and the Adam’s Mark at a cost of $11, one-way. On arrival at DFW, call the Super Shuttle Dispatcher by dialing 02 on the telephone at the Information Board in the baggage claim area. The dispatcher will direct you to a waiting area, and the van should arrive within 15 minutes. Vans leave the Adam’s Mark for DFW at 5 minutes and 35 minutes after the hour.

To drive from DFW International Airport to the Adam’s Mark, take the South Airport Exit to Highway 183 east. Follow 183 east to Interstate 35E. Go south on Interstate 35E and just before downtown, takethe exit marked “To Interstate 45/Interstate 75 Houston.” Merge onto Pearl Street. Go approximately 3 blocks to Live Oak. Turn right on Live Oak. Turn right on Olive Street and look for the Adam’s Mark Hotel on your immediate right.


EXHIBITS

Exhibits will be located in the Lone Star Ballroom on the Second Floor of the Adam’s Mark Hotel. The exhibit hours are as follows:


December 27 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
December 28- 29 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
December 30 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon


Your registration badge will provide you with admission to the Exhibit Hall.

INFORMATION BOOTHS

Information booths, staffed by local volunteers, will be located in the hotel. Assistance with directions will be provided, as well as information for Dallas tourist attractions, shopping, and restaurants.


SPECIAL EVENTS

Tickets for the following events should be ordered through pre-registration. Space is limited; so, members are encouraged to make their reservations early. Tickets may not be available at the meeting.

Opening Night Reception.
A special welcome reception will be held at the Dallas Museum of Art, Monday, December 27 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Discover art from the lost civilizations of the Aztec, Maya, and Anasazi in the Art of the Americas. Explore the extensive collection of ancient Egyptian and Nubian sculptures in the Arts of Africa while mingling with friends and colleagues from around the world. Tickets for the reception, which include admission to the museum, light hors d’oeuvres, one drink, and round-trip transportation are $25.00 per person.

Kimbell Art Museum. Don’t miss our excursion to the Kimbell Art Museum, on Tuesday, December 28. The Kimbell’s holdings span from ancient to modern times and include an outstanding collection of Asian art. Travel time to the museum, which is located in Ft. Worth, is 45 minutes each way. The bus will depart from the hotel at 9:00 a.m. and will return at 1:30 p.m. Lunch may be purchased at the museum. The cost is $10.00 per person.

Exhibit and Reception at Southern Methodist University. Join us for a special exhibit and reception at SMU’s Hawn Gallery on December 28. The exhibit showcases the work of various Texas archaeologists in their study of ancient Italian architecture. A reception hosted by the Dallas Society will follow. The bus will leave the hotel at 2:00 and return at 5:30 p.m. The cost is $5.00 per person.

Minority Student Scholarship Fund-raising Raffle and Reception. The APA’s Committee on Scholarships for Minority Students is sponsoring this year a fund-raising reception and raffle on Tuesday, December 28, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Adam’s Mark Hotel. Tickets to this event cost $50.00 and include admission to the reception; complimentary beer, wine, soft drinks, and snacks; and six chances to win the raffle’s grand prize: over $700 in books donated by a variety of academic publishers and complimentary registration to the next Annual Meeting in San Diego. Additional chances for the raffle (or chances in lieu of attending the reception) can also be purchased on the registration form at a cost of $10.00 for 1 or $25.00 for 3. You do not need to be present at the reception to win the raffle.

Lure of Egypt Lecture Program. Plan to attend this special lecture program presented in conjunction with the Annual Meeting. Bob Brier, Professor of Philosophy at Long Island University, and Jon Solomon, Professor of Classics at the University of Arizona, will address different aspects of the “Lure of Egypt.” This program will keep both lay members and professionals on the edge of their seats! You will have an opportunity to meet the speakers at a reception following the program. This event will take place at the Adam’s Mark Hotel on Tuesday, December 28 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5.00 if purchased when you register for the Annual Meeting. If you are not attending the meeting, the cost is $10.00 in advance and $15.00 on-site. Seating is limited; so, order your ticket in advance.

APA Presidential Reception: The Board of Directors cordially invites all APA members attending the 131st Annual Meeting to a reception honoring President David Konstan on Wednesday, December 29, immediately after the Plenary Session and Presidential Address. Tickets for the APA Presidential Reception will be included in the registration materials of all APAmembers.


Texas Style Reception. Join us on Wednesday, December 29 for a party that’s as big as all of Texas. The festivities begin at 9:00 p.m. and will continue until the wee hours. There will be music by hometown favorites “The Roof Raisers,” dancing, and surprises. You won’t want to miss it. Tickets are $10.00 per person and include admission, one drink ticket, dessert, and coffee bar. Open to all.

APA PUBLICATIONS

All APA members registered at the Dallas meeting will receive with their registration material and badge a certificate worth $10.00 towards the purchase of APA publications at the Scholars Press booth in the Exhibit Hall. Books must be purchased or ordered at the booth during the Annual Meeting itself. The certificate is valid only towards purchases of $20.00 or more.

ABSTRACTS

Abstracts for APA papers may be ordered on the pre-registration form or purchased at the Convention Registration desk. The price of Abstracts is $8.50. For those who have pre-paid, Abstracts will be included with your pre-registration materials. Abstracts for the AIA may also be purchased at $8.50: please indicate this on the pre-registration form.

Members not attending the meeting may order Abstracts directly from the APA office for $8.50, plus the following postage: $2.00 for first-class U.S. postage; $3.75 for Canadian shipments; and $5.00 surface postage for foreign shipments. Copies will be mailed in late January.

AIA PROGRAM

APA members may purchase a copy of the AIA program for $5.00; please indicate this on the enclosed registration form. The AIA program may be picked up with your pre-registration materials.

APA/AIA PLACEMENT SERVICE

The Placement Service Headquarters will be located in the Adam’s Mark Dallas Hotel. You must register for the Annual Meeting to use the Placement Service interview facilities at the meeting. The Annual Meeting registration fees are separate from your membership dues and Placement Service dues. All arrangements for interviews between applicants and institutional representatives during the course of the Annual Meeting should be made through the Placement Office.


CHILD CARE

Child care will be offered by KiddieCorp, a licensed, full-service provider employing screened, experienced, CPR- and/or First Aid-trained and certified staff. Children will participate in a customized schedule of creative, educational, age-appropriate activities. The center will operate from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. December 28 through 30 at the Adam’s Mark Hotel. Please use the enclosed Child Care Registration form.

Please sign up on or before November 22, 1999 to guarantee your spot. Children must be registered for a minimum of three consecutive hours. Rates are $10 per hour per child. The AIA/APA and KiddieCorp reserve the right to cancel child care for insufficient registration.

WEATHER

In December, Dallas visitors will enjoy highs in the upper 50’s with lows in the upper 30’s.
