AMERICAN ACADEMY IN ROME - NEW YORK, NY (Two Positions)

POSITION ONE: The American Academy in Rome invites applications for the three-year position of Director of the Classical Summer School, a three-year term, for 2004-2006. Established in 1923, this six-week program is open to high school teachers and graduate students of Latin, ancient history and the classics and also to advanced undergraduate students, middle school and two-year college teachers, a significant component of whose teaching involves Latin, ancient Greek or Classical civilization. This program is designed to provide a well-founded understanding of the growth and development of the ancient city of Rome and its immediate environs from the earliest times to the age of Constantine through a careful study of material remains and literary sources. Reporting to the Mellon Professor in the Humanities, the Director is responsible for the overall operation of the Classical Summer School, with assistance from the Academy staff and the Assistant Director.

POSITION TWO: The American Academy in Rome invites applications for the position of Director of the Summer Program in Archaeology, a three-year term, 2004-2006.

The Summer Program in Archaeology was established in 1991 to give graduate students of Latin, ancient history and the classics, as well as archaeology and art history, an overview of current developments in archaeological method and theory, focusing on ancient Italy and the ancient Mediterranean world. This program is intended primarily for graduate students, but also accepts qualified, advanced undergraduate students. Participants in this 7-8 week program divide their time between Rome and field study at excavation sites. The Director reports to the Mellon Professor in the Humanities and is responsible for the curriculum, operation and quality of the program, with assistance from the Academy staff in Rome and New York.

Eligible applicants will demonstrate knowledge of Roman history and material culture, Latin, Italian and hold a position as a college or university faculty member.

Thesaurus Linguae Latinae Fellowship

The American Philological Association invites applications for a one-year fellowship, tenable from July 2003 through June 2004, with the possibility of renewal for one additional year, which will enable an American scholar to participate in the work of the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae Institute in Munich. Fellows at the TLL develop a broadened perspective of the range and complexity of the Latin language and culture from the classical period through the early Middle Ages, contribute signed articles to the Thesaurus, have the opportunity to participate in a collaborative international research project, and work with senior scholars in the field of Latin lexicography. The fellowship carries a stipend in the amount of $40,000 and is made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Applicants must be United States citizens or permanent residents, already have the Ph.D., or anticipate the award of the degree by July 1, 2003. The fellowship offers valuable experience for scholars in a variety of specialties (e.g., Latin language and literature, Roman law, Roman history, the literature of early Christianity); although it is not limited to individuals working in Latin philology, applicants should possess a thorough familiarity with and a special interest in the Latin language. It is anticipated that applicants will already have a reading knowledge of German and will be willing to work toward proficiency in spoken German. ASCSA Publications - Managing Editor

The American School of Classical Studies at Athens invites applications for the position of Managing Editor of the ASCSA Publications Department, located in Princeton, New Jersey. Primary responsibilities include the overall management of the Publications office; scheduling and overseeing the editing and production of at least four monographs a year; working with excavation directors and authors to develop assigned monographs; collaborating with the Editor of Hesperia; overseeing marketing and distribution; coordinating freelance editors and designers; and exploring new avenues for ASCSA publications.

The Managing Editor will also oversee staff in the Publications office; write regularly scheduled performance reviews; create an annual departmental budget; work closely with the chair of the ASCSA's Committee on Publications; and report to the chair of the ASCSA Managing Committee. POSITION TWO: Assistant/Associate Professor. POSITION FIVE: Director of the Gennadius Library. The American School of Classical Studies at Athens invites applications for the position of Director of the Gennadius Library in Athens. The appointment is for a three-year term, which begins July 1, 2004 and ends June 30, 2007, and is renewable. Applicants should be an established scholar in one or more areas of the Gennadeion collection (Greek history, literature and culture). The Director provides leadership in managing, conserving, and building the Library's collections including the Archives; fosters relations with the international scholarly community and local Greek community; and works closely with the School and Blegen Library and Archives to support the School's curriculum and research activities. Important administrative responsibilities of the Director include supervision of the Library staff; oversight of the budgeting process; and cooperation with the Trustees in fundraising efforts. EDITOR-IN-CHIEF - AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ARCHAEOLOGY
The Archaeological Institute of America seeks applications and nominations for the position of Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Archaeology. Candidates must have a distinguished record of research and publication in one of the fields covered by the journal as well as prior editorial experience. The duties of the EIC include the solicitation and editing of manuscripts accepted for publication, the appointment of Book Review Editor(s) and an Editorial Advisory Board, and fundraising for the Society for the AJA.

Compensation will be in the form of release time from the EIC's home institution (or in the case of an independent scholar, an equivalent dollar amount). The home institution will be expected to provide additional support, the amount and nature of which is subject to negotiation. The appointment will be for an initial term of three years, renewable once.

The AIA plans to announce the appointment of the new editor in October 2003. She/he will succeed the present editor on 1 July 2004, but there will be a period of shared responsibility beginning in January 2004 in order to ensure a smooth transition. Although the position is based at the home institution of the EIC, the EIC travels to Institute headquarters in Boston on a regular basis. The EIC reports to the Vice President of Publications on policy and editorial matters and consults with the Director of Publications and New Media on operational matters.

BOSTON COLLEGE - Chestnut Hill, MA

The Department of Classical Studies invites applications for a tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor, with a specialization in Latin literature, to begin in September 2003. Candidates must have the Ph.D. in hand by the time of appointment.

The department has four full-time and two part-time members. It offers a major in Classics, a minor in Ancient Civilization, and both an M.A. and an M.A.T. program at the graduate level. It also offers coursework in Modern Greek and participates in the college's core curriculum and in the Honors Program. Candidates should be prepared to teach both Latin and Greek from the elementary to the graduate level. They will also be required to teach courses in ancient literature and society via English translation. The normal teaching load is three courses per term.

Preference will be given to Latinists who also possess a demonstrated interest in Roman social and cultural history, and who show promise of creating innovative courses on ancient society. Readiness and ability to teach a large lecture course in classical mythology is a particular and important qualification.

The Crake Doctoral Fellowship. The Crake Foundation and the Department of Classics at Mount Allison University are pleased to announce the Crake Doctoral Fellowship in Classics for the academic year 2003-2004.

The Crake Fellowship is non-renewable, open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents who at the time of taking up the fellowship have completed all course and residential requirements for the Doctorate in Classics, passed all preliminary examinations and completed the research for the thesis, and who can reasonably be expected to finish the doctorate during the year of the fellowship.

The holder will be asked to teach one course in each of the Fall and Winter terms, give a public lecture, and be in Sackville from September to May.

Ancient Greek Language and Literature. The Department of Philosophy of the Faculty of Arts and Science seeks an assistant, associate or younger full professor of ancient Greek language and literature. The Department of History and Classics at the University of Alberta invites applications for a tenure-stream appointment at the Assistant Professor level. The candidate we are searching for will be a Hellenist, specializing in an area that complements existing faculty research interests. We are especially interested in candidates who take a broad, synthetic approach to literary and other forms of texts. Among the research areas we are particularly interested in adding to include (but are not limited to): drama, epigraphy, numismatics, oratory, papyrology, philosophy or religion. The ability to teach both Greek and Latin at all levels is essential and the successful candidate will also be expected to teach an introductory course in either Classical Mythology or World History as well as contribute in significant ways to the graduate program. The University of Cincinnati Classics Department is pleased to announce the Margo Tytus Visiting Scholars Program. Tytus Fellows, in the fields of philology, history and archaeology will ordinarily be at least 5 years beyond receipt of the Ph. D. and will come to Cincinnati to pursue their own research. Fellowships are tenable during the regular academic year (October 1 to May 31). There is also a Summer Residency Program offered separately.

There are two categories of Tytus Fellowships, long-term and short-term. Long Term Fellows will come to Cincinnati for a minimum of one academic quarter (two and a half months) and a maximum of three during the regular academic year. They will receive a monthly stipend of $1000 plus housing and a transportation allowance. Short Term Fellows will come to Cincinnati for a minimum of one month and a maximum of two during the regular academic year. They will receive housing and a transportation allowance.

 

Both Long Term and Short Term Fellows will also receive office space and enjoy the use of the University of Cincinnati and Hebrew Union College Libraries. While at Cincinnati Tytus Fellows will be free to pursue their own research.

The University of Cincinnati Burnham Classics Library is one of the world's premier collections in the field of Classical Studies. The Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota seeks to make an appointment at the rank of assistant professor in the area of Early Judaism. Williams College invites applications in a multi-departmental search for a new tenure-track position in Linguistics to begin in the Fall of 2003. Rank of Assistant Professor, although a senior appointment is possible under exceptional circumstances.
