STATEMENT ON RESEARCH

PREAMBLE

One of the APA's central functions is to encourage and facilitate research in classical studies and the dissemination of research results and knowledge of the ancient world to both academic and non-academic audiences. The APA's Outreach Division has the task of promoting a general understanding of classical studies to as wide an audience as possible. The present statement, prepared by the Association's Research Committee , offers an overview of the current scope and practice of research in classical studies. It is intended especially for those not professionally experienced in the field, including new and prospective members of the profession, elected policy-makers, and university, government and funding agency administrators and career reviewers. The statement is written within the North American context, which is the Association's primary constituency, but we also want to emphasize the strongly international character of the field and its contributions to international cooperation and understanding.
